The Big Three

Here is a simple review of the three modes of writing focused on in the Common Core. Understanding each will help guide your lesson design.

1. Argument

Writers use argument [1] to change the audiences' point of view, [2] to entice the audience into action, or [3] to convince the audience to accept the writer's explanation/evaluation on a topic.

2. Informational/Explanatory Writing

Writers use Informational/Explanatory Writing to explain or describe [1] why and [2] how a subject or process functions. Writers might define, describe, compare and contrast, or recall an experience to illustrate a point that will help to convey their understanding to readers.

3. Narrative Writing

Writers use Narrative to share experiences (real or imagined) for the following purposes: [1] to inform, [2] instruct, [3] persuade, or [4] entertain the audience. Narratives are structured in chronological order (time) or plot diagram.
