Steve VS. Dave

Now comes the hard part!
You have been given a taste of each speech and now it's time to finish the job, but you won't have to tackle the workload alone.

Choose an elbow partner. Choose a side: Team Steve or Team Dave?

You will study one speech while your elbow partner studies the other. Read carefully. You will share your knowledge with your partner later.

Once choices are finalized, get ready to become a Five (5) Minute Expert!

A five minute timer will be set (Click Here for a Timer) and you will focus on reading as much of the speech as possible within the time limit. How far will you go? You are responsible for becoming an expert for whatever part of the speech you read within the time limit.

To help you better strengthen your expertise, try the following annotation skill as you read.

C.U.S.
Circle, Underline, Star.
As you read, use your writing device to:

  1. Circle Tone words - use your tone vocabulary chart for help if necessary, but remember it is a reference tool only and you may not find exact words used in the speeches.
  2. Underline Detail words - details include people, places, dates, and locations, just to name a few. Try not to go crazy underlining every sentence. Stick to the important words by limiting yourself to three (3) underlines or less per paragraph.
  3. Star Important Paragraphs - such as the paragraph that contains the thesis or main topic, supporting points, or shifts in the author's perspective and tone. Also try to limit this to three (3) paragraphs.
