There are no dumb questions, but questions are not created equally and some students don’t know how to ask academic questions. Teach students how to ask academic questions that they can use throughout the school year.

Steps
1. Present the following PREZI [Levels of Questions PREZI] as students take notes in a writing notebook/journal.
2. Alternatively, you may also distribute the following handout [Level Questions handout] to students and use it to guide them to developing questions.
3. Ask students to practice developing Level Questions using age appropriate content. Typically, I ask students to compose 3 Level One questions, 2 Level Two questions, and 1 Level Three question. Some optional alternatives to textbook materials includes:
4. Give students time to test their questions by sharing with an elbow partner (a partner within elbow distance). Can their elbow partner answer their questions?
5. Choose a few questions to present to the class for answers.
